History - Lake Grace Mennonite Church
In the summer of 1981, several Mennonite families settled in Wayne
County and purchased property the following year. They bought several farms in the
area: the old Tankersly farm, the Harvey chicken farm, the Hershel Collins' farm, and
the Billy Mullis farm.
The life of the Mennonites is centered around their religious beliefs and the
importance of education. On September 20, 1982, a Christian day school began classes
in a tenant house on the Tankersly farm. Later that fall, their first Sunday School
service was held at the home of Joe Overholt.
Walter Overholt served as the Mennonites' first minister. At that time, church
services and Sunday School services were held in the members' homes. Later, the services
were held in the Empire Church.
By January 1983, services were regularly held at the "Harvey House." Following a
rapid growth in membership, the Mennonites constructed a new building and held its
first service on December 7, 1987.
The Mennonites continue to be valuable assets to the community of Odum. Their talents
are reflected in their many contributions to our area.
